I had a problem like this too.  My problem was the kernel default uses 50 hertz scan rate and in the US every this is 60 hz.  I installed the u-boot from this thread:

Had issues too booting my OrangePi Plus, turned out it didn't like the image on the sdcard from Windows.  I created an image in Ubuntu and it boots fine now with several different images.  If you don't want to install Ubuntu you could try using a live disk - that or Debian 8.

For my experience, different sd cards have different results.
In my situation, a sandisk 4gb cl4 card don't boot at all, and a kingston 4gb cl4 (damaged) boot without problems.
I tryied to make an img from the kingston card, if someone wants to try if it works i'll give you the link to dl it
It would be interesting to compare which cards/os works and which not.
