RetrOrangePi 3.0 keyboard + controller problem

I have been trying to get RetrOrange pi working on a Orange Pi One.
I am unable to configure my keyboard in emulation station
I can configure the keys up until the end then @ OK it quits (won't save)...however the F4 will exit me to the terminal

I found a entry discussing hotfix.zip to correct.

error 404
?????
I also loaded the xbox driver for a controller 0.8.8 from source using retropie_setup.sh
reboot  and emulation station now says 1 gamepad detected but no button entry works
I ran jstest /dev/input/js0  but there is no data change on any key press

usb-devices clearly shows the xbox controller on the system
